Frequently Asked Questions 1. Is this for "student" or "experienced" pilots? The Flight RT Home Study Course is perfect for pilots and student pilots of all levels of experience. The course assumes no prior knowledge or experience of flight radiotelephony procedures. It's delivered in weekly portions to make your progress easier. Each week's lesson is broken down into a manageable chunk for your easy learning. There are also insights into airmanship and RT tips that absolutely any pilot will find useful. 2. Are there any "hidden costs" in addition to my course fees? The course contains everything you need to successfully pass both examinations for your FRTOL. You'll not need to purchase any additional books, CDs or study guides unless you personally decide you want to. Your monthly course fee for the 12 week duration of the course is all that you'll need to pay. 3. Does the course include personal coaching? Unfortunately, the answer is "no". While I will always be available to handle support requests, i.e. "I can't access this week's lesson", I simply don't have the time to personally coach all 100 students. Even if each student only asked one question per lesson it would be impossible for me to handle all of the requests. However, personal coaching is available for a small number of students as an optional extra to the course. Full details are provided once you join. 4. Do I have to commit to the entire 12 weeks? Of course not. Whilst I don't think you'll want to, you can cancel anytime you want. You can email me through the Contact Us link at the top left of this page for a prompt and courteous cancellation. Like I said, I don't think you'll want to do so after diving in and seeing the quality of the training! 5. How quickly can I get started with my training? Almost immediately. Once your first payment has been processed, which usually takes no longer than a couple of minutes, your details will be logged into the training system. You'll then be directed to a web page where you can access the lesson. You'll also receive an email in your inbox, normally within 5 to 10 minutes, containing a link to that same web page. The registration system is totally automated. So you can sign up any hour of the day or night, and any day of the week with the same result. Subsequent lessons will be sent by email at the rate of one lesson per week. 6. On what day of the week will I receive my weekly emails? There isn't a set "day" of the week when lessons will arrive in your inbox. The training system is set up to send out one lesson approximately every 7 days. Sometimes there may be a 24-48 hour difference in delivery time, but you'll always receive one lesson each week. 7. Where do I sit my exams and who conducts them? At the end of the course I'll give you a list of all the CAA approved FRTOL examiners so you can find the most convenient for you. There are examiners located all around the UK. The exams are normally held at an airfield as examiners can only hold the practical test in a specific location that's been assessed by the CAA. 8. How much are the FRTOL exam fees? The CAA don't specify what the exam fees should be so it's down to each examiner to decide what they want to charge. As a result, fees can vary from examiner to examiner, so you might want to shop around. As a guide, I charge £25 for the written exam and £50 for the practical exam, but other examiners have said my fees are too cheap! 9. Can I complete the course in a shorter period than 12 weeks? The course schedule is determined by the system I use to send out the email lessons. This can't be adjusted for each student. So the only way to complete the course in a shorter period is to save some of the lessons up when they arrive and not begin your studies right away. I chose 1 hour per week to fit in with most students' busy schedules and allow sufficient time for the information to sink in.
